L.A. County Porn Condom Initiative Headed for Ballot

LOS ANGELES — The AIDS Healthcare Foundation plans to submit more than 360,000 signatures to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder's office Friday in a bid to make condom use for porn performers mandatory in the county.

AHF President Michael Weinstein made known his organization's plans this afternoon. The AHF plans on bringing 35 boxes worth of signatures to the county building in Norwalk, Calif., after a press conference at L.A. City Hall Friday morning.

The county Registrar-Recorder still needs to validate the signatures and approve the measure for ballot placement. About 232,000 signatures are needed for a ballot initiative.

To qualify for the countywide November election, the AHF needs to submit the signatures by June 5.

The city of Los Angeles already has a porn condom ordinance, but it continues to be sidelined until the first week of September at the earliest because city leaders haven't yet drawn up formal plans to implement the law.

Attempting to dispel rumors that it has been seeking to secure a city deal for inspecting adult film sets under the city of Los Angeles' new porn condom ordinance, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation today announced that it wouldn't bid on such a contract.

The AHF began circulating petitions in December asking Los Angeles County voters to require porn performers to wear condoms during filming.

The move to go countywide would dramatically expand AHF's mandatory condom initiative's reach. Los Angeles County covers some 4,000 square miles and is home to over a quarter of all California residents, including the city of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, also known as Porn Valley.

AHF's county ballot measure would mandate porn movie producers to get health permits, just as owners of tattoo parlors, massage parlors and bathhouses do.

Producers would be required to pay for inspections and face $1,000 fines if they violated the law, according to the AHF's county initiative.
